- Barbecue! The famous Rendezvous is unparalled in its smoky goodness. Be prepared for simplicity -- the only beer they serve is Michelob and they don't allow substitutions on their side items-- and bring an appetite!
- Texas de Brazil. Yes, it's a chain and has nothing to do specifically with Memphis, but the food is unbelievable. It's a Brazilian-style churrascaria steakhouse; I don't speak Portuguese, but I think this translates to "big-@$$ed fillets and chops delivered to your table."
- Stax and Sun. Whether your musical tastes run to soul or rockabilly, these historic record labels were a tremendous influence on most every artist recording today.
- Graceland. Seriously, the Jungle Room alone is worth the trip.
- The hotels. The Peabody is known for its beautiful, historic decor, its rooftop bar, and its famous duck march. I prefer the Beale Street Westin for more modernist luxury (including an oversized steam-shower and a bed that wowed even this Sleep Number enthusiast) and its pet-friendly policy -- not hard to imagine that my Little Wildcat (a Black Lab) wasn't welcome around the Peabody's ducks...
- Beale Street. Yep, it's gotten so commercial that there's a Hard Rock. In fact, there's a strong argument to be made that Beale Street is now as authentic to the Memphis experience as 4th Street is to Louisville. Still, you have to stay downtown and you have to go out on Beale. It's the law of visiting Memphis. I recommend the Beale Street Tap Room; it's more laid-back with a jam band feel and plenty of brews on tap -- far fewer frat boys than Silky's and the like.
- The shopping. I didn't take in the shopping I wanted on my last Memphis weekend, but you can bet your Big Blue fanny that my next trip will include trips to the Pottery Barn outlet and the Vineyard Vines store.
