I know, blasphemy. These words are coming from the anti-Card herself. You may be wondering if I've had too many little hobbit glasses of ice wine.
I met Angel last summer during a little jaunt to Hoops to watch a team of former UK players take on some other semi-pro teams. (Does it really matter who the other teams were?) I got a little confused on my way to Hoops, as it required crossing into the 'burbs a bit and took a wrong turn. When I exited my car, emblazoned with a big blue K sticker, Angel McCoughtry stopped me in the parking lot and said, "I wanted to help you. I was afraid you were lost, and I thought you might be coming here."
I'll admit my jaw dropped a little. The first strike against me was the UK adorned car. Added to that, I was wearing a little skirt, ribbon flip-flops, and pearls. Not exactly an athlete-in-action headed for a day at Hoops was I.
I headed into the facility, where I was greeted by several courts, all filled with basketball players in various t-shirts. Where was my team, I wondered? I asked the young man working at the desk where I might find the three Kentucky players. Angel came to my rescue again. "I'll help you," she said and led me through Hoops. Shocked, I followed her to my designated court.
I'm watching right now as the Lady Cards take on Oklahoma in the Women's Final Four. I guess I should take a cue from Angel and set aside the silly state rivalry thing...oh, who am I kidding. But I do wish Angel all the best. Let's hope she's the first pick in the WNBA draft next week.
