Last night Brandon (I am obviously the world's best point guard as my back-up is an NBA Champion) Stockton's Kentucky Bisons defeated the number one ranked Nashville Broncs in an ABA matchup. The Broncs feature a roster that is a flashback of the SEC: former Vandy coach Jan van Breda Kolff leads his troops including Vanderbilt's Mario Moore and Ronnie McMahan and Tennessee's Jemere Hendrix. I kept very scientific stats of the former SEC players on the back of a receipt from the White Lightning gas station in Shepherdsville. Brandon's are correct. Everyone else's may be dubious. They are as follows:
Stockton: 3 steals, 3 turnovers, 1 assist, 3 rebounds.
Moore: 10 points, 1 steal, 1 rebound,
McMahan: 10 points, 1 assist, 1 rebound, 1 flop
Hendrix: 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 turnover, 1 fight (what do you expect-he went to UT)
van Breda Kolff: 3 meltdowns
This was my first ABA game. It was quite fun. They play music throughout, at one blissful point playing "Tootsie Roll." Once when Brandon re-entered the lineup, and "Shawty's Back" was played. That better be coincidence. If not, it was really mean. There is also a booing soundtrack that I would like to borrow for Little League.
If any of you live in the Owensboro area and need some extra money, I recommend trying out for the Bisons Girls. You'll need to wear the stretch pants--emphasis on stretch. (Some of the current girls might find the Billy Bison mascot suit more flattering.) The ability to do the splits and a toe-touch is required. A tramp stamp is optional. One happy trail was unfortunately on display...
The ABA game is a little rougher than the college game, reminding me slightly of when I used to go watch hockey. I saw several mini-fights. At one point, the Broncs' Desmond Cambridge fell into the Bison bench. For some reason this upset him, causing him to kick and flail. The Bisons' Thad Key picked Cambridge up into the air, and hilarity ensued. Cambridge was put into timeout for the remainder of the game. The Broncs owner stormed the court to accost the officials, and Jan van Breda Kolff pointed his finger in the owner's face. (I'd like to see Billy do that to Lee Todd...)
As a southcentral Kentucky girl, this Bisons team is just fascinating to me. Six of the players grew up or played college ball right in my old stomping grounds. Coach Otis Key of Russellville played for the Harlem Globetrotters. His brother Thad, also brother of Tony, who once shattered a backboard on my neighbor Ty's head, is also on the team. Boris Siakim, of Caverna and WKU, plays center for the Bisons. Of course, I already mentioned Glasgow's Brandon Stockton.
If you have a chance, why not check out the Bisons? They're pretty entertaining, and Brandon and I will appreciate it.
I just found your blog, J and H, and I love it! The Kentucky Girls are what EVERY female on earth should aspire to be!!!
